Caffeine 'should not be used as a quick fix by tired drivers'
Tired drivers should not opt to drink caffeine as a quick fix to keep them alert on the roads, it has been argued.
Simon Elstow, Head of Training at the Institute of Advanced Motoring Drive & Survive, explained this is not enough to be safe on the roads.
Instead, sleepy travellers should stop for a rest, drink a cup of coffee, then have a 20-minute nap before they carry on.
Additionally, Mr Elstow reminded drivers to ensure they are using their lights responsibly, dipping main beams when approaching or following other cars and glancing to the left-hand curb to stop their sight by being affected by other motorists who have forgotten to stick to these rules.
"The risk of fatal accidents increases in the dark as visibility is reduced," he warned, urging people to have their eyes tested regularly.
Sandra Dodson, Deputy Chief Driving Examiner at the Driving Standards Agency, recently warned individuals their reaction speeds will be "considerably" slower when they are tired.
