Do not stop suddenly when looking for a parking space, expert says

Drivers have been warned not to stop suddenly on spotting a parking space, as this could be unsafe.

Simon Elstow, Driving Training Specialist at the Institute of Advanced Motorists Drive & Survive, explained it is better to slowly pass spaces to weigh up whether the car will easily fit in the gap.

What's more, individuals should not stop if there is traffic behind them and they should always make sure they use their mirrors and look over their shoulder frequently so they know what is around them.

"Parking is an essential part of driving which many people find stressful. Don't feel pressurised by other drivers waiting for you to park – it's important to take your time," the expert suggested.

He added that it is always better to park on the left-hand side of the road, particularly at night, while it is a good idea to park away from trolleys and corners in car parks as these are places where a vehicle could be vulnerable to damage.

Mr Elstow recently warned motorists not to rely on caffeine to give them a boost on long journeys, as stopping the car and having a 20-minute nap is important if drivers get tired.
