Drivers warned not to leave cars unattended while defrosting
Drivers have been told not to leave their cars unattended if they need to switch the engine on to defrost the windows in the morning.
Leicestershire police explained this behaviour provides an easy opportunity for thieves to make away with vehicles.
"It can be tempting to leave car engines running ... and go back inside a warm house, but this means that it is easy for someone to get in and drive off with your car," Inspector Gill Lewis cautioned.
She advised drivers to stay with their motors and take the key out of the ignition if they have to leave their automobiles unattended.
The policewoman warned many thieves actually wait for this time of year, when early morning frost means many people need to defrost their vehicle windows, to search for motors that have been left running.
Another precaution drivers may need to make during the colder months is to use winter tyres, with Chairman of TyreSafe Stuart Jackson recently stating the products are particularly important between October and March.
