Expert tips offered for after a crash

Even the safest of drivers cannot absolutely avoid the possibility they will have an accident on the roads and such an incident is likely to be a harrowing and stressful event for any person getting behind the wheel.

This is why Simon Elstow, Head of Training at the Institute of Advanced Motorists Drive & Survive, has suggested individuals prepare themselves just in case they find themselves in a crash.

He offered tips on what people need to consider if they are involved in an accident so they can stay safe and reduce the impact of the incident on their finances.

Car insurance details should be swapped with any other drivers in the accident immediately, the specialist stated.

Other information motorists need to share with each other include their name, registration, address and the colour and model of their vehicle.

While individuals must be in a position to let other drivers know these details straight away, it is also essential they do not leave the scene without receiving the same information back.

Additionally, it is vital motorists keep themselves and other road users safe after an accident and Mr Elstow recommended they find a place off the road to exchange details with other vehicle owners, particularly if no one has been injured.

This means they will be shielded from the threat posed by passing traffic, but to ensure oncoming cars are warned of the crash, it is also important they leave their hazard lights on and switch their engines off.

Although an accident is undoubtedly stressful for many motorists, Mr Elstow suggested trying to stay as calm as possible while the situation is being handled and refrain from becoming too emotional when discussing the event with the other driver.

"The reality is nobody wants to think about having a car accident. But it's important to be prepared in case you are involved in one. And if it happens, try not to get angry or upset," he stated.

Statistics from the Department for Transport on road casualties were released today (February 2nd), revealing 24,430 people were killed or seriously injured in the 12 months to September 2011.
