Govt 'should work with car insurance companies to lower premiums'

The government should work with car insurance companies to offer lower premiums to young drivers, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has said.

Discounts on the cost of the protection product should be available to people who take on further training for getting behind the wheel, the body argued.

The organisation made the calls in response to a Transport Select Committee report on the cost of motor insurance, which will be released tomorrow (January 12th).

Simon Best, Chief Executive of IAM, stated: "The simplest way to reduce insurance premiums is to prevent accidents."

He claimed the Pass Plus test "no longer provides a respected or effective training offering" and that the government, road safety bodies and insurers need to work together to provide options to young drivers.

It may not only be motorists in newer generations that could benefit from additional training, as Head of Road Safety at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Kevin Clinton recently recommended people keep their Highway Code knowledge refreshed.
